Located just 15 kilometers from Vau i Dejës, Sarda Island (historically known as Shurdhah) is one of Albania’s most attractive and historically rich destinations. Prime Minister Edi Rama shared images of this natural and cultural landmark today to wish citizens a good weekend:
"Good morning, and with these views of Shurdhah Island (Sarda) on the Drin River—a spectacular destination to visit—I wish you a pleasant Sunday," Rama wrote.
Once a hill featuring medieval ruins, the area was transformed into an island following the construction of the Vau i Dejës Hydroelectric Power Plant and the creation of its artificial lake. Today, this stunning island is easily accessible from the nearby village of Rragam.
Surrounded by vibrant greenery, crystal-blue waters, and the ruins of ancient churches and medieval structures, Sarda offers an extraordinary blend of nature and heritage. The earliest historical evidence of settlement here dates back to the 7th–8th centuries, confirmed by an outer necropolis and the remains of a Roman fortress.
