Sarda Island

A medieval treasure in the heart of the lake — the ancient city of Sarda.

In the heart of a picturesque landscape lies an enchanting island that hides, among its ruins, one of the most interesting cities of the Albanian Middle Ages: Sarda (present-day Shurdhah). About 8 km southeast of Shkodra, on a rocky hill 130 m above the lake, this fortified city and religious center — inhabited since late antiquity — reached its peak in the Late Middle Ages (11th–15th centuries).

Main points on the island:

  1. Shurdhah Pier — Boat Anchorage
  2. Church of St. Stephen
  3. Fortification Gate
  4. Residential Complex
  5. Church of St. Peter
  6. Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
  7. Ruins
